Recently my sister asked me to give her inspiration to update her style. Her style has always been very sporty and she really is the typical example of a tomboy. A couple of years ago I was able to convince her to start wearing mascara (and to comb her hair more often). More recently she cut bangs which look perfect with her eternal ponytail. But her closet still is quite young filled with hoodies, jeans (regular fit), converse and loads of color. Elements that are pretty cool but I did have some inspiration to update her look. While putting together this moodboard I really wanted to create a very casual look that fits her lifestyle of travel, working with animals and her adversity towards heels while being stylish, sexy and grown-up.
1. Jackets
You don’t have to give up style for warmth. Motorcycle jackets or parkas with shearling provide enough warmth without looking as if your going skiing. In the fall, a nice leather jacket would make the perfect outerwear for any tomboy. Think structure and beautiful lines.
2. Tops
To change up the closet of very colorful hoodies and t-shirts, I wanted to show her what a great look you create with more simple pieces. On our shopping list I put some basic sweatshirts, silk shirts, a good denim shirt and some high quality basic tees. I love the look of a shirt underneath a nice sweater or a very simple grey sweatshirt combined with a beautiful jeans. As for shirt and t-shirts, you can create cool looks with stripes, polkadots and stars. It doesn’t always have to be pattern on top of color on top of other patterns to have an original outfit. Simple can be beautiful too without being boring.
3. Denim
Denim is the perfect fabric for any tomboy and for every occasion. Since I’m a big fan of playing with fitted and loose fabrics and pieces, I suggested a skinny jeans. While wearing skinny jeans, you can add a loose shirt and still feel sexy and girly. Other than that, I felt like she should really add a denim shirt to her closet. Worn with the skinny jeans (still love denim on denim) or worn unbuttoned over a dress or top, it will look great.
4. Shoes
Walking in heels is not my sister’s favorite activity, but then again I think it doesn’t necessarily takes a heel to make you feminine (I still love them though). As a true Converse fan, I suggested adding even more colors to her collection. In this way she can always combine a shoe with another outfit. Because these aren’t the warmest shoes, I did wanted to show her a beautiful shoe that could be worn all throughout the winter. A Chelsea boot or a regular oxford laced up shoe would be perfect for this. And if she wanted to add a heel, I would suggest a thick, easy to walk in heel such as the Dicker boots or the Pistol boots.
